What the beginning student should know
This section contains useful information for the beginning student so they will
know what to expect when they arrive at class.
- Punctuality: The class is going to start at 7:45 PM
sharp. Please try to arrive a few minutes early so that you may begin
stretching out and be ready to help put down the mats when class starts.
- Uniforms and Clothing: Wear something comfortable and loose
but no shorts. Since we will be tumbling on the mats, you will want
some type of protection for your legs. Sweats or loose pants are
OK. Make sure it is something you can stretch in. If you want,
you can purchase a uniform later. The facility has a dressing room for you
to change clothes in if you wish to bring a change of clean clothes.
- Students visiting from other dojos: In keeping with Japanese
tradition, all visiting students are asked to wear a white belt when
visiting the class. Also, our students do not wear a hakama until a
certain rank is attained.
- Try before you buy: If you are unsure whether you want to
sign up, come by for a free trial class.
- Association Fees: If you continue to practice on a regular
basis, you will be required to join Wadokai Aikido. Wadokai is the
organization that certifies our rank and is headed by Sensei Suenaka in
Charleston, SC. Wadokai Association fees are $25 Sign up fee and
$45/Year maintenance fee.
- Student Notebook: When you sign up for classes, you will
receive a student notebook which will help you with more of the detail of
the class.
- Safe Practice: We will be doing exercises, tumbling, and
techniques that are at some points advanced. Beginning students do not
need, and are not expected to perform at this level. All students are
encouraged to increase their skills gradually to avoid injuries.
If you have any questions in addition to these, please feel free to contact the
instructor.

| General
Aikido Information |
Aikido is a Japanese martial art
developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title 'O Sensei'
or 'Great Teacher'). On a purely physical level it is an art
involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from jiu-jitsu
and some throws and other techniques derived from kenjutsu. Aikido
focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their
own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you.
It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the
dynamics of movement.
Due to the gentler nature of Aikido over other martial arts, many
people are drawn to it that might not be drawn to the martial arts
otherwise. It is ideal for smaller frame people as well as police
officers and others who need skills subduing people without hurting
them.
